Naspers launches free coding courses for Cape schools

South African companies are increasingly struggling to find the relevant tech skills to meet their needs, while also warning that we are unprepared for the “jobs of tomorrow” in the fourth industrial revolution.

To better prepare for and avoid this outcome, the South African government has moved to introduce tech skills to the basic education syllabus, while other groups are also looking for ways to bring South African learners up to speed.

SU Economics professor launches coding platform for schools

A fun computer programming platform founded by Prof Rachel Jafta of the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Economic Management and Sciences was launched at the Media24 Centre in Cape Town on Monday (25 November 2019).

The platform, WeCode24, is offered in collaboration with Naspers (funder), Media24 (media partner and digital internships) and the SU Department of Economics.

WeCode24, in essence, is aimed at helping high school learners from Grade 8 to 11 to develop the programming skills they need to excel in the technological era.

WeCode24, ’n program wat hoërskoolleerlinge in rekenaarprogrammering oplei, is gister in die Media24-sentrum in Kaapstad bekend gestel.

Dit is ’n program om minderbevoorregte leerlinge deur middel van opleiding in tegnologie te bemagtig.

Die program sal aanstaande jaar amptelik afskop nadat skole teen 15 Januarie daarvoor ingeskryf het.

New coding programme promises students computer science skills in a fun package

It’s possible to learn computer science skills while having fun. This was the message at a launch of a new programme, WeCode24, launched on Monday.

The programme is a partnership between Naspers, which is the funder of the project; Media24, which will provide digital internships for pupils; and Stellenbosch University’s economics department, and aims to help students at under-resourced schools to learn coding skills.
